Aftercare of Porcelain Veneers

Congratulations on your new smile with porcelain veneers! To keep them in good condition long-term, it is very important to maintain good oral hygiene and diet without harming the veneers.

Veneers are fitted on the front of your teeth and therefore, the part of your teeth that is not covered by the veneer can still decay.

So, good oral hygiene and a healthy diet are critical factors. To maintain your long-lasting porcelain veneers, follow the instructions below:

Oral hygiene:

Fluoride:

Using a toothpaste with fluoride gives you some protection for caries. Fluoride also reduces tooth sensitivity after inserting your veneers. Additionally, use a mouthwash with fluoride to rinse after brushing and flossing at night.

Cleaning/Brushing:

Make sure to use a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid ‘scratching’ the veneers. We recommend using an electric toothbrush. This will prevent you from using too much pressure. Furthermore, the bristles are soft in electrical toothbrushes.

If you use a manual toothbrush remember to rub with short movements and move the brush tooth by tooth. Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line. After brushing use dental floss to remove plaque (bacteria) between the teeth and under the gum line.

You can ask your dentist or dental hygienist to assist and show you how to do this properly. They will be able to provide the best guidance with techniques bringing you ease to continue a healthy dental routine.

If you have fixed retainers you can use super floss, interproximal brushes or electrical air floss, water picks. Please, check with your dental hygienist which is best for you to use.

Tooth Whitening:

After fitting your veneers, you cannot change the color. But for adjacent teeth, periodic whitening is recommended. We always establish a personalized treatment plan for each patient when whitening as every case varies.

Protection:

If you are fitted with a night guard after treatment, this will protect your teeth and veneers from wear and chipping if you grind or clench your teeth at night.

The night guard might need adjustment over time so make sure to bring this with you at every visit to the dentist.

DIET:

Following a healthy diet is extremely important since almost everything we eat and drink has different levels of sugar, carbohydrates, and acid. You can reduce this by rinsing your mouth with water after eating or drinking. Remember that juice and fruits have a lot of sugar and should be consumed with meals rather than between meals.

It is highly recommended to see your dentist and dental hygienist at least twice a year. This will ensure that your teeth remain strong and healthy, with your dental routine on the right track!

Lastly, don’t forget to enjoy your new smile! You’ve come through with a whole brand new, unique, and natural-looking smile to enhance your features and glow with confidence.
